I’ve Got Three Tickets to Paradise

12 11 2012

We all have different ways of making our children fall asleep. Some fall asleep after being fed, some fall asleep from gentle rocking back and forth, while others fall asleep from car rides. Our son loves to ride in the car. It’s the best way of getting him to knock out for the night. I don’t know what it is, but I think it’s from the constant motion while in the car seat.
When I was a baby, my parents used to drive me down to the train tracks in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They told me that the sound of the cars crossing the tracks would do the trick for me. Strangely, I can remember those sounds, and when I hear them now I usually want to nod off.
We’re about to go on a cross country trip in an airplane for the first time with our newborn in a few days, and I hope that our child can find some form of comfort for the journey. I was born overseas, and the flights from Saudi Arabia to Amsterdam to L.A., became second nature for me. I have no problem falling asleep after the first few minutes of takeoff, whereas my wife hates flying. It’s going to be interesting seeing how this flight goes, because instead of comforting one person, I’m now comforting two. Remembering back to earlier times when I was the passenger suffering from the screams of someone else’s child, I can only hope that our son doesn’t fuss too much. Then again it’s different, because as much as I hated hearing the howls from a child two seats ahead or behind, it feels like it’s time for a little payback. So if my son decides that he wants to let everyone know that he does not like the trip, I’m not going to feel too bad at all.
What I’m looking forward to is a nice relaxing time in S.D., where no matter what time of the year it is, it’s always sunny. I’ll be sure to let you guys know how the flight extravaganza went when we touch down in S.D. later on in the week. If you have any tips for me on how to keep a baby content during a flight, please let me know and share the knowledge.
