Are YOU Ready?

030106-N-5067K-004  As my husband and I prepare for his upcoming deployment, it got me thinking… are we really ready for it? Not just emotionally, but household care wise, are we ready? There are many websites out there that offer checklists that you and your spouse can use to make sure that before he/she leaves for several months with his/her command that everything back home will be taken care of in their absence.

Here are some very helpful links:

In all honesty, this will be the first deployment my husband and I won’t be together. When I was enlisted in the Navy, we were both stationed on the same ship. We’ve both been through our first deployment together back in 2010, before we were married or anything serious. So I know what it’s like to be a deployed Sailor. I will now learn what it means to be the wife of a deployed Sailor. What does that all entail? To me, it means running the house while he’s gone. That means being on top of bills, expenses, child rearing, maintenance, the cars, pretty much everything all while taking classes.

The best thing to do would be to get involved with the FRG of your spouse’s command. What is an FRG? Well, it’s the Family Readiness Group of the command that provides information, activities, and support during the deployment. It’s a way to connect with the other families of the command so you’re not feeling as if you’re going through this alone. There are others out there who can offer you a sense of belonging so you’re not feeling completely isolated for the next few months.

Another important resource would be the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC). They offer many services to you and your family, and many of them are at no cost to you. So taking advantage in everything they offer would be a smart idea. Don’t let opportunities pass you by.

If you’re looking for things to do in your area either for yourself or with your children (if you have them), check out your base MWR/ITT center for discounts on tickets to many places and events.

There are many resources out there to help ease into deployment life while your spouse is away. Please take advantage of them because they’re there for you and your family.
